Eco-Friendly Period Products: Go Plastic Free in July and Beyond

Traditional menstrual products like pads and tampons have haunted our dreams and created many embarrassing teenage stories! Fortunately, eco-friendly period products are getting a bit more screen time!

My personal favourites are the period pants and menstrual cups! I started off with a moon cup (purchased on amazon) which lasted me a couple of years without leaks or issues. I wasn’t sure how often you had to change them (I know read the label bla bla bla) but recently brought a new one ‘Saalt’ which comes with a little bag for storage. So far I’m loving it, bit more comfy than the wider moon cup. It was nice to purchase it from my local refill shop instead of the usual big fat amazon too!

Anyway I digress, lets dive in a little deeper…

The Case for Eco-Friendly Period Products

  1. Environmental Impact: Conventional pads and tampons generate a huge amount of waste. It’s estimated that around 12 billion pads and 7 billion tampons are discarded annually (WTF) Most of these products contain plastic, which can take hundreds of years to decompose. Eco-friendly alternatives, on the other hand, are designed to minimize waste and environmental harm.
  2. Sustainability: Eco-friendly products, such as menstrual cups, reusable pads, and period underwear, are made to last. This longevity reduces the need for constant repurchasing, saving resources and reducing your carbon footprint.
  3. Cost-Effectiveness: Now I will be the first to admit that I was put off by the cost of period pants at first. But then if you tot up how much you spend on tampons and pads (especially those emergency ones you have to buy) then over time the cost actually balances out and can be even cheaper.

The Benefits of Period Underwear to YOU!

Period underwear is designed to look and feel like regular underwear but with added layers of absorbent material. Now I havent tried the thongs (cant get my head around those) but the regular pants are amazing for heavy flow days. I am also a huge fan of the period swimwear, I usually wear these even with the menstrual cup in if I’m paddle boarding or wild swimming for a bit of extra confidence.

Comfort and Convenience: Period underwear is incredibly comfortable and can be worn just like regular underwear. There’s no need to worry about changing pads or tampons throughout the day, making it one less thing to worry about.

Leak Protection: High-quality period underwear offers excellent leak protection. Brands like Thinx, Knix, and Modibodi are worth investing in as they use multiple layers to ensure you stay dry!

Health Benefits: Now this is my favourite reason! Traditional tampons and pads often contain chemicals like fragrances, dyes, and bleach (urgh) Period underwear, on the other hand, is typically made from organic and non-toxic materials, reducing the risk of irritation and infections. If you suffer with pain you will also notice this is massively reduced due to the reduction of chemicals.

Reduced Risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS): Tampons are associated with TSS, a rare but serious condition. Since period underwear doesn’t need to be inserted, it eliminates this risk entirely. And lets face it we have all left a tampon in a wee bit longer than we should!

Where to Buy Period Underwear

  1. Thinx: One of the most well-known brands, Thinx offers a wide range of styles and absorbencies. They shout about their products being designed with comfort and functionality in mind, and they even offer options for teens which is wonderful.
  2. Knix: Known for their ultra-soft fabric and seamless design, hey also offer a variety of styles to fit different preferences (yes thongs)
  3. Modibodi: This brand is celebrated for its inclusive sizing (thier models are beautiful varied) and eco-conscious production methods. Modibodi offers a range of products, including period underwear, activewear, and swimwear!

Remember, cheaper alternative are available BUT not all period pants are equal. Some may contain chemicals and plastics which possibly negate the eco credentials.

Other Eco-Friendly Period Products

  1. Menstrual Cups: Again a personal favourite. These silicone or rubber cups collect menstrual blood and can be worn for up to 12 hours. Brands like DivaCup, Lunette, and Saalt offer various sizes and styles to suit different needs. Its worth looking into what size will work for you espeically if you havent had a vaginal birth as you space might be a little shall we say….snug!
  2. Reusable Cloth Pads: Made from natural fibers, these pads can be washed and reused. They’re available in a range of absorbencies and styles from brands like GladRags and Charlie Banana. I personally havent tried these yet but may do in the future.
  3. Organic Cotton Tampons and Pads: For those who prefer the familiarity of tampons and pads, organic options are available. Brands like Natracare and Rael offer products made from 100% organic cotton, free from synthetic chemicals and fragrances. I do have to say that these are always a touch more expensive than the regular ones so it really is a personal choice for you.
